TEN DESIGN TRENDS 2023

Updated: Apr 27, 2023

  1. BACK LIGHTING: Often sought out by photographers, Back lighting is also an on-trend design technique for Interior Designers. Both are seeking the amplification of light behind a darker element. What this does is provides an accented layer to the existing layers within the design. It is often used for mirrors, art sculptures, or architectural features.

2. ARCHES & CURVES: This is certainly not a new element of design & architecture, but we are seeing plays on this trend developing. In the early 2020’s we started to notice cabinet upgrades (as shown) develop from the basic square shape to a rounded arch at the top. We started to see more scalloped shaped tile, wall paper, and so on.. The trend with curvy shapes and arches is moving towards architecture in a bigger way. We are seeing more arched ceilings in various heights with curved edges and features. You can see this used in standalone openings like in this shower as well as architectural special features.

3. CLAY & PLASTER: This trend is growing quickly with Artists & Designers. Since the materials are so durable, moldable, and come in so many application varieties the design possibilities are endless. The trending feature with this design element is the integration of a created piece of art now becoming a permanent feature of the space.

4. DETAILED CEILINGS & WALLS: For me this is a big one. This trend is the true flex of your math skills. If you are fortunate enough to get connected with a truly passionate & talented carpenter don’t let them, go. These next few years you are going to need them. More clients are requesting that selected walls and ceilings have these impactful elements. They bring more sales value, impact, and can in some cases be the cause for an entire remodel.

5. DOOR FEATURES & UPGRADES: This design trend is nice because some of us can do these upgrades ourselves. There are thousands of styles to choose from or create completely from scratch. You can do this with your cabinets & furniture also. Upgrading your doors can have a huge impact with smaller homes that don’t always have a lot of impact architecturally. It can also be a huge home upgrade to do a unique and beautiful front door. Make sure whatever style you go with you stick with for consistency.

6. WELLNESS DESIGN: If global events taught us anything it is that we all need more self-care systems. The thought of staying home feels a bit nicer if you have a nice home gym, or wellness studio at your fingertips. It’s no surprise that this is now our number one most requested space to add or recreate for our clients. Our homes are a direct link to our overall wellness, so it is important to understand what we require from our homes for optimal performance.

7. LIGHT ARCHITECTURE: This design trend demands a bit of preplanning and forward thinking. The best way this trend is achieved is by understanding what times and positions the light (either sun or moon) enters the space and how it will be transferred across the surface. I know! So cool right! Again, pre-planning is key here but when done right the results are flawlessly divine.

8. ARTISTIC INSTALLATION'S: What a fun & creative way to feature an element within your space. So many artists are creating their own plays on lighting, adding texture, or adding in a full art installation instead of furniture. The creations are endless.

9. DOWNPLAYED MONOCHROMATIC: The key with this is “Downplayed” so not the checkered or diamond style flooring you normally see. The trending component here is downplaying the use of darks and the contrasts to lighter colors. For example, One black staircase in a white house, or black frame doors and windows in a white house. Black frames with white photos, you get the idea. It’s not always so “black & white” This trend speaks more to the overall contract of dark to light despite the color or texture.

10. NATURE INSPIRED: The more we look at nature the more we realize how far we still need to go against the grand design. New trends are rising from these divinely inspired elements as shown in the images here. The trending feature is the accuracy in replicating the sensation of the element itself.
